This year a total of twenty-four (24) awards for studies in U.S. graduate degree programs (MS and Ph.D.) will be offered to candidates from all member countries of the OAS in the western hemisphere including Canada. The program focus will continue to be on ecology and the environment. Candidates should propose programs of study in the natural sciences, social sciences, and public policy which focus on multidisciplinary approaches to environmental preservation and sustainable development of the region.

Applicants must have outstanding academic and professional qualifications and the potential to take a leadership role in addressing environmental issues in the region. Each candidate must have at least three years of substantive professional experience and present a letter from a recognized institution attesting to professional standing and accomplishments as well as potential for leadership in fostering environmental preservation. The goal of the program is to develop a group of well-prepared professionals who will return to their countries upon completion of their U.S. studies to share their expertise with colleagues while maintaining contact with each other.

A minimum of 480 on the TOEFL is required at the time of application and advanced English language training has been provided when appropriate. In addition to the degree program, grantees are encouraged to pursue short term internships at U.S. environmental organizations or agencies during their grant period. When feasible, grantees will return to their home countries during the summer to carry out research.

Applications are available at the Fulbright Commission (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay) or the U.S. Embassy in all other participating countries. The application can be downloaded from LASPAU's web site.

THE APPLICATION DEADLINE IS May 30, 2003.
